Vietnam: Past and Present is a two week study abroad program led by History Professor Matt Mauser that will immerse you in historical and modern Vietnam through local Vietnamese roommates, academic excursions throughout the country, lectures, and activities. The course topics include pre-colonial and colonial history; the Vietnam War and its consequences; the modern economy; Vietnamese demographics and society; and the educational system. Through lectures, visits to historic sites, extended excursions, assigned readings, and writing assignments you will come away from your time in Vietnam with: - a basic understanding of the main currents in pre-colonial and colonial Vietnamese history; - knowledge of the Vietnam War, including the roots of the war, the importance of Ho Chi Minh, the effects on Vietnamese people, and contemporary understanding of the war; - knowledge of Contemporary Vietnamese society' especially economic trends, family life, and the political system
