During the spring 2018 semester, you will enroll in EN 373 Contemporary Travel Narratives and read travel narratives - all true stories - published within the last twenty years and in English. You will read Tahir Shah's fun-filled romp through India in Sorcerer's Apprentice; Christiane Bird's observation of Iran in Neither East Nor West; Michael Benanav's grueling trek through the Sahara in Men of Salt; a Honduran boy's harrowing ride on Mexico's trains in Sonia Nazario's Enrique's Journey; Suki Kim's expose of North Korea in Without You, There is No Us; and finally Sarah Moss's experience of Iceland in Names for the Sea. All students enrolled in EN 373 Contemporary Travel Narratives have the chance to travel to Iceland to provide which will provide you with a real-life experience to complement the reading about the country in Names for the Sea. You visit the same sites that Sarah Moss describes in her book and be exposed to the history, culture, climate, geography, and people of Iceland. EN 373 is an English elective and fulfills the Aesthetic Engagement and Global Engagement core learning outcomes. EN 373 is also a writing intensive course.
