Are you fascinated with French culture? Always dreamed of exploring Paris? Now you have the chance! Professor Leapley will be leading a one week international trip to Paris this spring break to complement courses offered on campus during the spring 2016 semester. Students interested in traveling to Paris over spring break are encouraged to enroll in FR 321 Contemporary France, FAH262 Contemporary Film or FAH 220: New Ways of Seeing: 20th Century Art. You will visit a wide variety of cultural attractions and exhibits throughout the city. Studying abroad in France’s capital will create opportunities to help develop, deepen, and test the concepts you are learning in the classroom, further building the cultural background needed to fully access and understand the French, their culture, and their role in the world. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: FR 321 Contemporary France: With a view to better understanding the French and their role in the world; we will study contemporary France, including its institutions, cultural production, social practices, and worldview. Conducted in French. Prerequisite: FR 200 or above FAH262 Contemporary Film: 1945 to the Present A study of American and foreign cinema in the post World War II era. The interaction of film and society, as well as specific genres and directors will be considered. (Thursdays, 1-3:30 PM; fulfills Aesthetic Engagement core requirement) FAH 220: New Ways of Seeing: 20th Century Art - A study of revolutionary individuals and movements in the visual arts of the 20th century, including Fauvism, Cubism, Expressionism, Constructionism, Dadaism, the Bauhaus, and Surrealism. Emphasis on European works up to 1945. (Wednesdays, 1:30-4 PM, fulfills Aesthetic Engagement core requirement). *All guided museum visits and excursions will be in English.* Students interested in traveling to Paris, enrolled in another French language class but not in one of the above classes please meet with Professor Leapley. The program to Paris will depart on Saturday, February, 7 and return on Sunday, March 6, 2016. If you plan to enroll in the courses linked to the international program it will meet throughout the spring semester. The Application Deadline is November 9.
