This course examines the Cold War, the international rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union that lasted from 1945-1991. We will explore the origins of the Soviet-American conflict, the two countries’ struggle for global influence, and the effects of the Cold War on American and Soviet domestic affairs. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a week-long study abroad program to Cuba during spring break. Learning outcomes: --a basic understanding of the main themes and events in the Cold War; --a detailed understanding of the role of Cuba in the Cold War; --knowledge of Cuba’s history and culture; --knowledge of contemporary Cuban society; --knowledge of contemporary U.S.-Cuban relations While in Cuba you will visit the following sites to complement your lectures: - Jose Marti Memorial - Old Havana - Museo del Revolucion - Brunet Palace & Architecture Museum - Museum of Fine Arts - Overnight excursion to Trinidad & Bay of Pigs HI 399 The Cold War will be taught throughout the spring semester with an optional international component over spring break. You must elect to take part in the international component prior to October 15, 2016. Travel dates: March 4 - March 12, 2015. The application deadline is November 10.
